After losing both of their jobs at a non-profit agency last year, Ken Adams and Melanie Gill decided to spend their time giving back to Ann Arbor. They will be teaming up with NewPoint Learning Centers, a national tutoring organization dedicated to ensuring student success as well as collaborating with schools to deliver high-quality instruction.
Education is big on both sides of our families, Gill said. And with the state of education in our country today, we know that kids are really going to need all the help they can get to succeed and compete.
Gill hopes to not only assist with students who need tutoring, but plans to focus on helping kids who have learning disabilities and challenges with learning.
So much of my lifeand careerhas been working with people who have developmental disabilities, Gill said. The second area of great interested to us is to develop our college planning program.
The decision to open the center was inspired not only by the loss of their jobs, but by Ken Adams recent health problems.
My husband has lived through a myriad of serious health conditions, Gill said of their decision to open this business. "We pulled it together and he is now on permanent disabilityHe started this Center to be able to give back to our community.
Ken and I both enjoyed teaching while at the Kidney Foundation and wanted to continue on in this field. We were impressed with NewPoint's approach to learning: individualized plans for each student. It just makes sense- every student learns differently!
The NewPoint Learning Center has a long history of improving the grades and over-all education of students grades K-12. Subjects taught by the center include math, reading, writing, study skills, homework, college preparation and summer school.
No requirements [are] needed, were there to work with any students needing tutoring, in any subject, Gill said. I will run the Center, but we will be hiring all of the tutors.
The NewPoint Learning Center is planned to open in November and will be located at 2216 S. Main St. in Ann Arbor, next to Great Harvest Bread Co. and Wild Birds Unlimited. For more information, visit www.newpointlearning.com.
